Faux Ceramic Vase DIY

I’m excited to say creating a faux ceramic vase is super easy and I’m going to show you how! This DIY is truly for anyone.

If you’ve been on Instagram recently you’ve probably seen lots of beautiful ceramic pottery being used more, and more in home decor.

I’m not going to lie, I couldn’t wait to go thrifting to find the items I needed to try this DIY out!

Where to Find Items to Repurpose for Faux Ceramic Vases

I went to our local Goodwill and was able to find exactly what I was looking for. Other stores you could go to are

• Dollar Store
• Target (look in the dollar bin area)
• Local thrift stores
• Michaels discounted items
• Look through your own decor (repurpose items you already have)

I found the 5 items shown below and paid $16.49. 😳 As I was walking through Goodwill I was thinking this could be dangerous, lol. My mind was spinning over how much they had and ALL the repurposing possibilities.

I obviously had never done this DIY before and wasn’t sure how it would work on different surfaces. All of the vases I bought were different materials.

The tall vase is wood, the teal vase is ceramic, the pink vase is plastic, and the 2 candle pillars are glass.

Supplies Needed for this Faux Ceramic Vase DIY

• Vase
• Matte Spray Paint (color optional)
• Water Based Paint (color optional)
• Baking Soda
• Paint Brush or Foam Brush
• Bowl for Mixing
• News Paper or Cardboard

I used BEHR paint, but you can use any water-based paint including acrylic paint from a craft store.

For this DIY I used the paintbrush pictured below, but you could use a foam brush as well.

Steps to Create a Faux Ceramic Vase

Step 1

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your items are clean. Then you’ll do one coat of Matte spray paint. This will give a good primer base for the next step.

Here are the vases with one coat of Matte spraypaint and ready for the next step.

Step 2

You’ll mix about 1 1/2 cups of water-based paint and 1/2 cup of baking soda together. You can always add more baking soda if you’d like. There is no exact ratio. I mixed till I got the consistency I wanted.

The first coat you will paint horizontally and let dry for about 20 minutes before applying the second coat.

Step 3

Apply the second coat in a vertical direction. Pictured below is what the vases and candle pillars looked like after the second coat had dried.

I’ve seen others that have done this DIY do 3 coats of paint. I was happy with how it looked after 2 coats so, I stopped there.

I feel like with every DIY in general you kinda need to go with the flow and adapt to what’s working for you while doing it.

How to Style Faux Ceramic Vases

Now for the fun part!! Decorating! 😍 I bought faux olive branches at Hobby Lobby, the faux plant from Target, and the other items I already had on hand.

If you want the truth it took me an hour to figure out how to style this. 😂 No joke. I’m just keeping it real for you. I couldn’t get it to look quite right until I added the beads and the dish the candle is on.

Once I added those items it was perfect. I absolutely love how these Faux Ceramic Vases came out!
