How to DIY Dried Orange Garland for Christmas Decorating
If you’re like me, then you like to change things up a little every holiday season with your decor. I love having natural elements and wanted to add dried orange garland this year.
This DIY is a first for me and I’m so glad I decided to make it because I’m kind of obsessed!
I’ll be showing you how easy it is to DIY dried orange garland, and then I’m going to show you how I used it to decorate our staircase banister.
If you have little ones I can guarantee they will love to do this fun DIY with you!
How Long Will Dried Orange Garland Last
I’m sure you’re wondering about this, I was too. The good news is as long as it’s stored properly the dried orange garland will last you 2-3 years. You’ll want to keep them in an airtight container all by themselves and in a cool dry place.
Dried Orange Garland Supply List
There are so many options when it comes to decorating with the dried orange garland. Your supply list will change depending on how you want to dress it up. The picture above shows you what I was thinking about using. Keep scrolling, the plan obviously changed. Lol
I decided I wanted to keep it simple looking and the picture below shows I ended up using plain old fishing line. My husband saved the day for me!
Using the fishing line keeps it almost invisible and it allows you to place the oranges very easily. Win, win!
What You’ll Need
- 4-5 Oranges
- Twine, String, or Fishing Line
- Small Needle
- Scissors
- Cookie Sheet
- Oven Safe Cooling Rack
Step 1
Slice the oranges about 1/8th of an inch thick. Preheat the oven at the same time, I used the convection setting for an even heat at 200 degrees.
Step 2
Place orange slices on an oven-safe cooling rack placed on top of a cookie sheet. I did see other tutorials using parchment paper. You could do either, but I chose to use the cooling rack, this will allow the air/heat to circulate all around.
Step 3
Use a paper towel and blot all of the orange slices really well to remove as much moisture as possible.
Step 4
Place orange slices in the oven and bake between 3-4 hours depending on your oven settings and the thickness of your orange slices.
Around the 3 hour mark flip the slices and check how they’re coming along.
Once the orange slices are dried out to the touch, remove them from the oven and set them out to cool.
Step 5
Once cooled you’re ready to string them all together.
Loop through one side going through the back and out the front again. Easy peasy!
Leave enough on the end to make a loop to tie off for easy hanging.
Ways to Use Dried Orange Garland
The options are endless when it comes to how you can use dried orange slices. I’ll share below some ways that you can use them and then keep on scrolling to see how I used mine to decorate our staircase banister.
- Hang on your Christmas tree, Mantle or staircase banister
- Add to your front door wreath
- Use with cinnamon sticks, berries, and pinecones to make a potpourri
- Use them in your table centerpiece
Let’s Get Decorating
You only need a few items to pull this off and the battery-operated twinkle lights are my favorite! Why, because they also have a timer option!! I don’t know about you but EVERYTHING Christmas needs to be automated! 😉
What You’ll Need
- Your favorite kind of green garland
- Battery operated twinkle lights here
- Trim ties here
- Dried Orange Garland
- Any other accents you’d like to add
I’m glad I decided to use the fishing line to string the dried orange slices together. It gave the exact look I was going for.

I think I might like to try this! Do they smell amazing when you walk by? I still need to work on my staircase garland and mantel so this will be perfect for one of these. I wonder if mandarins will work in place of oranges. What do you think?

I was surprised the smell doesn’t stick around. You could always use a potpourri spray on them to add more scent though. I think the mandarins would work just fine. Good luck and Happy Holidays!🎄
